The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) general manager of communications Ellen Lewis said yesterday that WASA can sustain the country’s water needs until July 2010. Lewis said WASA has modelled its output requirements to provide potable supplies to the population until July 2010, if there is no additional rainfall. ’The success of the water management approach has a lot to do with a reduction in customer demand as a consequence of water saving best practices being adopted by all consumers-domestic and commercial,’ she said.

Despite the assurance, the state of the local water reservoirs are raising some eyebrows. There are four reservoirs in the country and they are all significantly lower than they usually are for this time of the year. However Ezekiel Sampson, meteorologist at the Meteorological Office at Piarco, gave the country some hope when he said the country could expect to move into the transition phase between the dry and wet season by May. Sampson said the country could expect some transitional showers in April despite experiencing a ’pretty harsh’ dry season this year.
