My view on this is that ‘gospel’ is not a genre of music. ‘Gospel’ defines the content which supposed to be the Word of God.
Calypso, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Classical define genres of music, they describe the type of beat.
As i asked a co-worker recently “what does ‘gospel music’ sound like? Gregorian chants? A Pentecostal Revival or a Catholic hymn?… He couldn’t answer!… What makes the difference in delivering the music is the anointing!
I agree that any catchy beat may lead us into ‘temptation’ but so can a good-looking preacher for the sisters or a pretty choir girl for the brothers. A ’secular’ singer could sing about God but is it the gospel? In the same way i have heard ‘gospel’ singers sing songs that have only hype and emotion, no message.
We have to be more open-minded, don’t put God in a box and cast everything else to hell but at the same time use wisdom and discretion in everything!
